I recounted what Mark told me. Tony’s face relaxed a little, and his shoulders dropped.

“So they did know each other. But why would Tyler lie about it?”

“It does kind of make him look suspicious.”

“Yeah, but he’s dead,” said Tony. He leaned back in his chair. He rolled the sleeves of his long-sleeved white shirt up to his elbows.

He had a point. “Why would he be worried about how it looked unless he had something to hide?”

Tony nodded. “Unless they were working on something together?”

“Another scam? Maybe one involving Larissa and her husband?”

Tony’s fingers reached for his chin. He stroked the stubble there. I was told at Quantico that the more cases and the more time my partner and I spent together, the more we would learn about each other. This was only our second case, and yet, I could already tell when he was thinking, when he was irritated, and when he had an idea but was still trying to figure it out.

Now he had an idea, but he was still sorting through it.

“Like, maybe, Tyler was scamming the wife, and Jordan was scamming the husband. Tyler gets all the money he can from her—”

“If it was a scam, they would have had to know that her husband was going to look for a private investigator.”

Tony sighed. “Yeah. We need to speak to Larissa again.”

“I’m so tired of talking to that woman,” I groused.

The corner of Tony’s mouth quirked up. He was right though. She was the last person with Tyler before he died. So we did need to talk to her again.

Shortly after lunch, officers brought Larissa to the field office and placed her in one of our interrogation rooms.

Larissa wore a skintight pink dress with a plunging neckline. She didn’t look like a woman who had just watched her boyfriend get murdered. She was calm and cool and looked like she didn’t have a care in the world.

“Can we hurry this up? I have a massage in an hour.” She sat in one of the metal chairs and crossed her legs.

I glanced at Tony, his brows slowly knitted together.

“A massage?” I asked as I sat across from her.

“It’s been a stressful few days. I need to relax.”

“Thought you would be grieving for poor Tyler,” said Tony. He sat next to me, resting his elbows on the table.

She cocked her head to the side and glared at Tony. “I’m all cried out.” Her eyes weren’t even red.

“We just wanted to ask you a few more questions about Jordan and Tyler.”

Larissa rolled her eyes. “I told you before they didn’t know each other. We didn’t know Jordan.”

“He did.”

Larissa looked at Tony then, her frown lines getting deeper the longer she stared.

“Tyler and Jordan were friends. They worked a lot of scams together.”

Her bottom lip quivered for a split second. If I hadn’t been looking at her, I would have missed it. She fixed her face so quickly.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Larissa—carefree Larissa—leaned back and folded her arms across her chest.
